Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that causes the tiny blood vessels in the back of the eye to become blocked, leak or even rupture. Early signs can be blurry vision, floating spots or poor night vision. Fortunately, like many of the complications of diabetes, the progression of retinopathy can be slowed or even stopped with early detection and appropriate treatment.

For this reason, Portland Family Practice has recently contracted with EyeTel Imaging to offer eye exams for our patients with diabetes. Now you can get your annual eye exam in the convenience of our office!
The digital images are sent to Wilmer Eye Institute at John Hopkins Medical Center via the phone line after your appointment. Faxed or electronic reports are reported to your provider within 48 hours.
Your diabetic eye exam is billed to your insurance just like a medical appointment.
Please call our clinic at (503) 233-6940 to schedule.  If you do not have insurance please contact our billing office for assistance. Providers and Staff at Portland Family Practice

As many of us know, Portland is one of the best cities for bikers.  In fact, in 2009 the League of American Bicyclists recognized Portland as the first major city in America to be designated as a platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Community.  Though most Portlanders consider biking to be a year-round activity, there is always an increase in the number of bikers on the road during the summer.  At Portland Family Practice we support our biking community and several members of our staff, including our physicians, commute to the office by bike on a daily basis.  Other staff members enjoy biking as a leisure activity, helping to decrease stress levels and to promote cardiovascular health.
This season Portland Family Practice is focusing on bike awareness and safety, and wants to provide our patients with more information regarding the benefits of bike riding.  In order to help with this, we have asked Dr. Pete Regean and Dr. Cynthia Shaff-Chin to share some of their favorite biking memories with us.

Dr. Reagan started commuting to school by bike beginning in the first-grade when his ride consisted of only six blocks.  Overtime his rides became longer and more difficult, but he has been committed to bicycle commuting for the past 57 years (and happily has only been involved in two accidents).  Dr. Reagan is active in other sports as well, including marathon running and mountain climbing, and he attributes his athleticism to his daily bike commute.
Dr. Cynthia grew up in Davis, California where bike commuting is very popular and the love of biking runs in her family.  Last year her 67-year old mother participated in the Seattle to Portland ride (120 mile one-day ride), and is planning on joining Cycle Oregon this September.  Dr. Cynthia tries to make time to bike every day, and she finds the morning air and the Portland rain to be very refreshing.
This summer, and year round, we’d like our patients to create their own biking memories.  We have provided links to some local resources to help get your summer biking started.
Remember: Once you learn to ride a bike, you will never forget!
